چکیده

Radiation of X-ray bursts and of accretion shocks in weakly magnetized neutron stars in low-mass X-ray binaries is produced in plane-parallel atmospheres dominated by electron scattering. We first discuss polarization produced by single (non-magnetic) Compton scattering, in particular the depolarizing effect of high electron temperature, and then the polarization due to multiply electron scattering in a slab. We further predict the X-ray pulse profiles and polarization properties of nuclearand accretion-powered millisecond pulsars. We introduce a relativistic rotation vector model, which includes the effect of rotation of polarization plane due to the rapid motion of the hot spot as well as the light bending. Future observations of the X-ray polarization will provide a valuable tool to test the geometry of the emission region in pulsars and its physical characteristics.

Millisecond Pulsars in X-Ray Binaries

Despite considerable evidence verifying that millisecond pulsars are spun up through sustained accretion in low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), it has proven surprisingly difficult to actually detect millisecond X-ray pulsars in LMXBs. There are only 5 accretion-powered millisecond X-ray pulsars known among more than 80 LMXBs containing neutron stars, but there are another 11 “nuclear-powered” mil...

Accreting X-ray Millisecond Pulsars Observed with Integral

I review the properties of three X-ray accreting millisecond pulsars observed with INTEGRAL. Out of seven recently discovered accretion-powered pulsars (one discovered by INTEGRAL), three were observed with the INTEGRAL satellite up to 300 keV. Detailed timing and spectral results will be presented, including data obtained during the most recent outburst of the pulsar HETE J1900.1-2455. Accreti...

X-ray and γ-ray observations of millisecond pulsars

The launch of several sensitive X-ray and γ-ray instruments during the last decade heralded a new era in the research of millisecond pulsars. The current number of millisecond pulsars detected in the X-ray spectral window is about 30, including those located in globular clusters, which represents a significant fraction of the total number of spin-down powered pulsars emitting high-energy radiat...

The X-ray emission properties of millisecond pulsars

Until now X-radiation from ten millisecond pulsars has been detected. In the present paper we summarize the observations and show the results of a re-analysis of archival ROSAT data. In addition we present the results of recent observations of PSR J0437−4715 with the ROSAT PSPC and HRI detectors. We show that the pulsed fraction is independent of energy in the range 0.1−2.4 keV. The pulse width...

The discovery of millisecond pulsations from neutron stars in low mass X-ray binary (LMXB) systems has substantiated the theoretical prediction that links millisecond radio pulsars (MSRPs) and LMXBs. Since then, the process that produces millisecond radio pulsars from LMXBs, followed by spin-down due to dipole radiation has been conceived as the ’standard evolution’ of millisecond pulsars. Howe...
